Plan your cloud migration before moving the first workload
A practical sequence for assessing dependencies, testing the move and preparing recovery.
Map the existing environment
Identify applications, databases, storage, scheduled tasks and external connections. Record which components depend on each other and who owns their operation.
Understand the workload
Measure the resources the application uses and the periods when demand changes. Consider storage growth, network traffic and ongoing operating costs alongside the initial migration.
Prepare a representative test
Use an isolated environment to rehearse deployment and data movement. Check application behaviour, scheduled jobs, access controls and monitoring before committing to a cutover.
Define recovery
Document the point at which a migration is stopped or reversed. Confirm backups can be restored and decide how new data created during the change is handled.
Transfer operational ownership
Handover should include credentials management, monitoring, backup schedules and clear support responsibilities. A migration is complete when the receiving team can operate the environment.
